French Education Vocabulary: Courses, Registration and Feedback

Learn useful French for asking about a course, submitting work and understanding feedback, with an original dialogue and answer key.

French education vocabulary becomes useful when you can ask about a course, understand what must be submitted and explain what you learned. This selection moves from registration to feedback, with an original exchange about an evening class.

From enrolment to feedback

French itemUseful combinationOriginal example
un cours (m.)suivre un coursJe suis un cours de français le mardi soir.

une formation (f.)suivre une formationCette formation comprend trois ateliers pratiques.

Expand from one class to the whole learning cycle

Choose a path

Un programme (m.) lists planned content; un objectif (m.) states what you want to achieve; un niveau (m.) describes a stage; un préalable (m.) names something required beforehand. Ask Quels sont les objectifs du programme ? and Y a-t-il un niveau préalable ? before deciding whether a class fits. An atelier (m.) is often a practical workshop; a séance (f.) is one meeting or period of work. L'atelier comprend quatre séances tells you how the activities are organised.

Work in class

Une leçon (f.) introduces or explains material; un exercice (m.) gives you a task; une correction (f.) shows how work was reviewed. Après la leçon, nous avons fait un exercice, puis comparé nos corrections. Un groupe (m.) is a set of learners; un binôme (m.) is a pair. Travaillez en binôme means with one partner, not the whole group.

Describe progress accurately

Une compétence (f.) is an ability; un progrès (m.) is an improvement; une difficulté (f.) is a problem or challenge; une erreur (f.) is a mistake. A specific self-report is J'ai fait des progrès en lecture, mais j'ai encore des difficultés à résumer un texte. This is more actionable than Je suis mauvais en français. A teacher's retour may identify an error and suggest another exercise; it is not itself the diploma.

Use s'inscrire à un cours for your own enrolment and inscrire son enfant à l'école when you enrol another person. Larousse records both constructions. Une formation can be the process of learning or the set of knowledge acquired; its meaning depends on context. Do not assume every course grants a diploma: ask which document, if any, is awarded.

Original exchange: choosing a class

Amine asks about three distinct matters: deadline, weekly workload and the end-of-course document. The responsible person does not promise a qualification. This is a useful model for asking precise questions before enrolling.

Check your recall

  1. Complete: Je voudrais m'inscrire ___ un cours du soir.
  2. Which word names the instructions for an exercise: consignes or diplômes?
  3. What is the difference between suivre un cours and rendre un devoir?
  4. In the exchange, what does Amine ask about the end of the course?
  5. Write one polite question asking when a homework exercise must be submitted.

Answers and explanations

  1. à: s'inscrire à un cours.
  2. les consignes. A diploma is a document that records a qualification or title, not task instructions.
  3. The first means attend or take a course; the second means submit a specific assignment.
  4. He asks which document participants receive at the end. The exchange gives no answer about a diploma.
  5. For example, Pourriez-vous me dire quand je dois rendre le devoir ? It asks for a date without assuming one.

Transfer task: report a learning need

Write two French sentences for a teacher: name one task you can do and one difficulty you want to practise. A model is Je peux lire une annonce de cours et repérer la date d'inscription. J'ai encore du mal à comprendre les consignes longues; pourriez-vous me proposer un exercice ciblé ? The first sentence gives evidence of a skill; the second identifies a specific next task.

If you need to describe your own learning, replace the fictional details with a real course and record three pairs: noun plus verb. For broader level-guided practice, start with our A2 vocabulary selection or B1 selection, according to the language task you can already manage.

Larousse: inscription; s'inscrire; formation; devoir; diplôme. Examples are original.
