B1 French Vocabulary for Connected Accounts and Plans
An editorial B1-oriented vocabulary selection for recounting events, naming an obstacle, explaining a response and describing a plan.
At a B1-oriented stage, vocabulary should let you connect events, explain a problem and give a brief reason for a plan. This selection uses a fictional community-course story so you can see how the words work together rather than memorising an untested list.
Selection 1: tell what happened
Une expérience (f.) is something lived; une activité (f.) is what people do; une rencontre (f.) brings people together; un souvenir (m.) is what remains in memory; un événement (m.) is something that happens. Useful verbs are participer à, découvrir, se rendre compte de and raconter. J'ai participé à une rencontre de quartier et j'ai découvert un atelier de jardinage. To show order, use d'abord, ensuite and finalement: D'abord, je me suis inscrit; ensuite, j'ai rencontré le groupe. These expressions make an account connected rather than a pile of nouns.
Selection 2: name the obstacle and the response
Un obstacle (m.) can delay a plan; une difficulté (f.) names a problem; une solution (f.) is a way to address it; une possibilité (f.) is an option; un changement (m.) is what becomes different. J'ai rencontré une difficulté: l'horaire de l'atelier ne convenait pas à mon travail. Use avoir du mal à plus an infinitive: J'avais du mal à arriver à l'heure. Use chercher une solution rather than pretending it is already found. J'ai demandé s'il existait une autre séance gives a concrete response.
Selection 3: give a reason and a result
Une raison (f.) explains a choice; une conséquence (f.) follows from it; un résultat (m.) is what happened; un avantage (m.) is a positive aspect; un inconvénient (m.) is a negative one. J'ai choisi le groupe du soir parce que je travaille le matin. Ainsi, je peux venir chaque semaine. Parce que introduces the reason; ainsi introduces the result in this context. You can add a limit: Le groupe du soir me convient, mais le trajet est long. This is more informative than saying only that the new group is “better.”
Selection 4: plan the next step
Un projet (m.) is an intention or proposed undertaking; un objectif (m.) is a target; une priorité (f.) is what matters first; un progrès (m.) is improvement. Use prévoir de plus an infinitive, espérer and décider de to show different degrees of commitment. Je prévois de suivre l'atelier jusqu'en décembre; j'espère pouvoir ensuite aider au jardin collectif. Prévoir is a plan and espérer a hope, not a confirmed outcome. Un bilan (m.) can summarise what has worked: À la fin du mois, je ferai le bilan de mes progrès.
Original connected text
The narrator reports a past obstacle, an action and two observed results. The final sentence is a plan, not a claim that the three months have already passed. The text is original and fictional.
Check meaning and reuse
- Why did the narrator want to join the workshop?
- What obstacle did they face?
- What specific action addressed it?
- Name two things the narrator reports actually doing or learning.
- Complete: J'ai participé ___ une rencontre.
- Which is a plan rather than a result: J'ai rencontré des voisins or Mon objectif est de continuer?
- Write two connected sentences about a fictional class: one obstacle and one action to address it.
Answers and explanations
- They knew few people in the neighbourhood. Parce que je connais peu de monde ici gives the reason.
- The Saturday-morning schedule conflicted with their work.
- They wrote to the organiser, who offered a Thursday-evening session.
- They attended twice, learned to prepare seedlings and met neighbours. Any two of these observed events answer the question.
- à: participer à une rencontre.
- Mon objectif est de continuer. It describes an intended future action.
- For example, L'horaire du cours était un obstacle pour moi. J'ai demandé une autre séance à l'organisatrice. The second sentence shows a response to the first.
For more practice, retell the story as the organiser in three sentences, keeping the chronology and the difference between observed results and future aims. If routine questions still need work, use the A2 selection. For vocabulary that compares options in more detail, continue to the B2 selection.
