A2 French Vocabulary for Routine Exchanges
An editorial A2-oriented French selection for services, costs, changes and clarification, taught through a fictional workshop booking.
At an A2-oriented stage, the useful step beyond isolated phrases is managing a routine exchange: ask for details, compare a simple option, explain a change and confirm the next action. This editorial selection teaches vocabulary through a fictional workshop booking.
Selection 1: ask about an ordinary service
Un atelier (m., workshop), une séance (f., one session), un horaire (m., schedule), une adresse (f., address) and une place (f., an available spot here) form a useful cluster. L'atelier comprend deux séances. À quelle heure commence la première ? asks when the first session starts. Add une inscription (f., registration) and s'inscrire à (to register for): Je voudrais m'inscrire à l'atelier du samedi. Est-ce qu'il reste des places ? means “Are there any places left?”; it checks availability rather than assuming it.
Selection 2: handle price and conditions
Un prix (m., price), un tarif (m., stated rate or fee), une réduction (f., discount), des frais (m. plural, extra charges) and un total (m., total amount) help you compare. Le tarif est de douze dollars; y a-t-il des frais supplémentaires ? asks whether there are extra charges beyond the rate. Un reçu (m., receipt) records a payment; payer par carte means pay by card. Est-ce compris ? means “Is it included?”: Le matériel est-il compris dans le prix ? asks whether materials are included in the price.
Selection 3: describe time and a small change
D'habitude (usually) marks a routine; cette fois (this time) marks a particular occasion; hier (yesterday), aujourd'hui (today) and demain (tomorrow) place it in time. D'habitude, je viens le matin. Cette fois, je viendrai l'après-midi. Un changement (m., change) can affect a booking; annuler means cancel; reporter means move to a later time. Je ne peux pas venir mardi; puis-je reporter ma séance à jeudi ? asks whether a change is possible. The provider's rules decide the answer.
Selection 4: explain a practical need
J'ai besoin de... (“I need...”) asks for a needed item; je préfère... (“I prefer...”) compares choices; parce que (because) gives a reason; mais (but) marks a contrast. Je préfère la séance du soir parce que je travaille le matin, mais je peux venir samedi. Pourriez-vous répéter ? (“Could you repeat?”) is polite when you miss a detail. Si j'ai bien compris... (“If I understood correctly...”) checks your understanding: Si j'ai bien compris, l'atelier commence à dix heures ? The final question allows correction.

Noé : Bonjour. Je voudrais m'inscrire à l'atelier de dessin du samedi. Est-ce qu'il reste des places ?
Organisatrice : Oui, pour la séance de dix heures. Le tarif est de douze dollars et le matériel est compris.
Noé : Merci. D'habitude, je travaille le samedi matin, mais cette fois je suis libre. Puis-je payer par carte ?
