TEF Canada Results, Validity and Retakes: CCI and IRCC Rules
Understand provider result timing and certificate validity, Express Entry's separate age rule, the 20-day retake interval and incident appeals.
TEF Canada results, certificate validity and an Express Entry deadline are three different planning questions. CCI currently says results are transmitted in 1 to 10 working days, describes a two-year certificate validity and requires 20 days between TEF sittings. IRCC separately requires Express Entry language results to be less than two years old both when you complete your profile and when you submit the permanent-residence application. Read the rule for the action you are taking.
First: receive the official result, not a practice estimate
CCI's TEF Canada page says it transmits results in 1 to 10 working days from the test day. Its journey page describes this more approximately as “about two weeks”. These statements are compatible as planning estimates, not a guaranteed delivery date: CCI's conditions say additional verification can delay a certificate. CCI sends an email link to a digital vault for the electronic attestation, rather than issuing a paper certificate. If the email has not arrived, check spam and contact your test centre; CCI identifies the centre as your main result contact.
The attestation gives a result for each skill. CCI says reading and listening raw correct totals are converted to calibrated scores; writing and speaking are assessed against standardized criteria and also converted. Do not infer an official score from a small practice set. For score interpretation, the published TEF Canada NCLC chart owns the detailed IRCC table and worked boundaries.
Second: separate CCI validity from IRCC's use rule

IRCC says an application submitted with expired language results will be refused. If results may expire before you can submit, IRCC lists options including retesting, applying before expiry or declining an invitation and returning to the pool. Third: enter the correct TEF column in Express Entry
IRCC currently instructs TEF Canada candidates entering Express Entry results to use the column labelled “Équivalence ancien score” for each ability. It explicitly says not to enter the “Score / 699” values into the Express Entry profile because those values are incompatible with its system at this time. Your attestation may show both. CCI's own certificate page repeats the old-equivalence instruction. Follow IRCC's live instructions and your actual certificate rather than guessing from a single TEF number.
IRCC also has a special notice for tests taken from December 11, 2023 through May 6, 2024 after a score-information change. If yours falls in that window, read that notice and any CCI message before using an old saved value. The existing score chart gives the exact component order and boundaries; this page does not duplicate them.
Retaking TEF Canada
CCI says candidates may take TEF Canada again, but its current conditions prohibit presenting the same TEF component, across TEF versions, twice within 20 days. The TEF Canada certificate page describes a 20-day interval between successive sittings. Count carefully and confirm the new booking with the centre; the rule is not a promise that a suitable seat will be available on day 21. A voluntary retake ordinarily requires a new booking and centre fee; a validated serious incident follows CCI's separate procedure described below. No retake guarantees a higher result.
A test-day incident is different from disagreement with a score
CCI's current results page and conditions limit its recours procedure to a serious anomaly or malfunction during the test. Report it to the invigilator on test day so the centre can record it. CCI says a request can be filed within 30 days from the issue date of the attestation through the candidate account, and describes review of test-session evidence. This is not a general request to see the confidential prompt or obtain a detailed re-mark; CCI says candidates cannot access their written production or oral recording through this process. If CCI validates a serious incident, its conditions describe a possible free retake of affected components and cancellation of the former result. A practical deadline checklist
- Record your test date, centre, booking reference and the date shown on your official attestation.
- Check the CCI certificate terms and the separate IRCC rule for the exact application step you plan to take.
- Before entering Express Entry results, locate “Équivalence ancien score” by label for speaking, listening, reading and writing.
- If close to expiry, check an actual retake session early; leave room for the 20-day rule and uncertain result delivery.
- If a serious test-day problem occurs, report it immediately and use CCI's official appeal route within its stated window.
