TEF Canada Section B Persuasion Phrases for Real Objections
Use adaptable French phrases to present an offer, understand a friend's concern, answer objections and propose realistic options in TEF Canada speaking Section B.
Useful TEF Canada Section B phrases respond to a friend, rather than decorate a speech. Use them to present an offer accurately, find the objection, offer a relevant reason and leave the other person a real choice. This functional reference complements the complete Section B task guide and dialogue.
The job of each phrase
Section B lasts 10 minutes. The provider's public sample asks the candidate to tell an examiner playing a friend about an everyday announcement and try to convince that friend to participate. It describes presenting the situation, developing ideas and holding an informal conversation. The examples below therefore use tu for a friend. If a practice card establishes another relationship, adjust the register; do not mix tu and vous with the same person.
| Purpose | Adaptable French wording | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| The friend needs to know what you are discussing. |
| A condition matters to the choice. |
| Connect to the friend | Comme tu cherches une activité dehors, cela pourrait te plaire. | You have a reason tied to their interest. |
| The objection is vague. |
| You have heard a real concern. |
| The announcement leaves uncertainty. |
| A reversible first step addresses commitment. |
| The friend still declines after a fair discussion. |
These are sentence frames. Replace the activity and the reason with the specific announcement and person in your practice. A phrase does not become persuasive because it sounds forceful. Tu dois absolument venir ignores the friend's constraints; a reason such as La séance finit avant ton travail du soir can be tested and discussed.
Respond to five kinds of objection
“I don't have time”
The response checks what “no time” means. It does not invent another date; it proposes verifying one.
“It is too expensive”
The price is a fictional detail for this exercise. Do not claim an unstated discount or free trial to erase the concern.
“I don't think I can do it”
The reply uses a stated feature and seeks the missing detail. It does not promise the friend will feel comfortable.
“The offer sounds too good to be true”
This is a useful concession: the concern improves the decision. Do not repeat an advertising claim as a guaranteed fact.
“I simply prefer something else”
The friend may never agree. In practice, sustaining a natural exchange is more useful than forcing a yes. The provider's oral preparation article describes resistance as part of the exercise; it does not require you to obtain an actual agreement.
Keep conditional phrases grammatical
Si on y va samedi, on pourra partir avant midi presents a possible future plan. For a hypothetical suggestion, Si on y allait samedi, on pourrait partir avant midi uses imperfect after si and conditional in the main clause. Avoid Si on irait samedi... for that condition. The OQLF explains these conditional patterns. Simpler present and future forms are often enough; grammar should clarify the choice, not burden it.
For general cause, result and concession linkers, the existing French argument-connectors guide owns the detailed grammar. This TEF reference concentrates on turns that respond to a friend's objections.
Exercise: replace pressure with a response
An invented announcement offers a Saturday community cooking class. It says beginners are welcome, the class costs 25 dollars and participants bring their own container. Rewrite each weak candidate line so it addresses the friend's concern without making up a benefit.
Possible rewrites and explanations
It uses a stated detail and invites the real objection.
It admits the missing fact rather than inventing a departure policy.
It respects the budget and avoids a false discount.
For a second round, make the friend object for a different reason after each reply. Say the next line aloud without reading. Check whether you described the announcement accurately, listened to the objection, gave a relevant option and kept the friend free to choose. These are practice checks, not official scoring rules. The provider's preparation page links public samples.
