TCF Canada Work Vocabulary: Words You Can Use
Build French work vocabulary for job and workplace conversations with useful combinations, a written dialogue, common confusions, and practice answers.

Work is a rich topic for French practice because it lets you describe experience, ask precise questions and explain a problem. This guide gives you words you can actually combine in a job conversation or an ordinary workplace message. It is an original study resource, not a list of official TCF Canada terms or a claim that any particular topic will appear on your test.
Work words worth learning with their articles
Do not memorize poste alone. Learn a short phrase such as un poste à temps partiel. The gender is then easier to recall when you make your own sentence.
| French | Meaning and usage | Example in context |
|---|---|---|
| un emploi (m.) | a job or paid employment | Elle cherche un emploi dans le commerce. |
| le travail (m.) | work in a broader sense, including the activity itself | Ce travail demande de la patience. |
| un poste (m.) | a particular role with defined duties | Ce poste comprend le suivi des commandes. |
| une offre d'emploi (f.) | a job advertisement or opening | J'ai répondu à une offre d'emploi. |
| une candidature (f.) | an application or candidacy | J'ai envoyé ma candidature lundi. |
| un CV (m.) | a curriculum vitae | Mon CV résume mon expérience. |
| un entretien d'embauche (m.) | a job interview; une entrevue d'emploi is also used in Canada | J'ai un entretien d'embauche demain. |
| un employeur, une employeuse | an employer | L'employeuse explique les tâches du poste. |
| un collègue, une collègue | a colleague | Ma collègue prépare la réunion. |
| une compétence (f.) | a skill | La communication est une compétence utile. |
| une expérience (f.) | experience | J'ai de l'expérience en service à la clientèle. |
| un horaire (m.) | a schedule | Quel est l'horaire habituel ? |
| un salaire (m.) | a salary or wage | Pourriez-vous préciser le salaire proposé ? |
| une réunion (f.) | a meeting | La réunion commence à neuf heures. |
| une échéance (f.) | a deadline or due date | L'échéance du projet est vendredi. |
| le télétravail (m.) | remote work using communication tools | L'équipe fait du télétravail deux jours par semaine. |
Useful combinations, not isolated translations
- Répondre à une offre d'emploi: J'ai répondu à l'offre d'emploi publiée lundi. The preposition is à.
- Poser sa candidature à un poste: Je souhaite poser ma candidature à ce poste. This is a clear alternative to postuler.
- Envoyer son CV: Je vous envoie mon CV et une courte présentation. For a job document in French, use CV; the OQLF discourages résumé when it means a CV.
- Passer un entretien d'embauche: Elle va passer un entretien d'embauche jeudi. In Canadian French, you may also hear passer une entrevue d'emploi.
- Décrire ses tâches: Je réponds aux clients et je prépare les commandes. Concrete verbs show what you do better than a string of abstract skills.
- Respecter une échéance: Nous devons respecter l'échéance de vendredi. In a workplace message, add the actual date if it matters.
- Demander une précision sur l'horaire: Pourriez-vous préciser l'horaire du poste ? This is more useful than asking only Quels sont les horaires ? when the role is unclear.
An original written dialogue: discussing a role
Use this as a reading and rewriting exercise. It is not an official question, a recorded demonstration or a timed speaking answer.
Recruteuse: Bonjour, Lina. Merci d'être venue. Qu'est-ce qui vous intéresse dans ce poste ?
Lina: Bonjour. J'aime le contact avec les clients, et j'ai deux ans d'expérience dans ce domaine.
Recruteuse: Pouvez-vous me donner un exemple de tâche que vous faisiez souvent ?
Lina: Je répondais aux questions par courriel et je transmettais les demandes complexes à ma responsable.
Recruteuse: Dans notre équipe, il faut aussi préparer un compte rendu après chaque réunion.
Lina: Cela me convient. J'ai déjà rédigé des comptes rendus. Quelle est l'échéance habituelle ?
Recruteuse: Nous les envoyons le lendemain matin. Avez-vous des questions sur le poste ?
Lina: Oui. Pourriez-vous préciser l'horaire et la place du télétravail dans l'équipe ?
Recruteuse: L'horaire est indiqué dans l'offre. Nous pouvons revoir ensemble les modalités du télétravail.
Lina: Merci. Je vais relire l'offre avant notre prochain échange.
Why it works as language practice: Lina supports a general claim (j'ai de l'expérience) with a specific past task (je répondais...). She asks about an échéance and an horaire instead of assuming details. You can replace her examples with your real experience without memorizing the exchange.
Three distinctions that prevent awkward phrasing
Emploi, poste and travail
In OQLF terminology, un emploi is a paid activity in an employment setting; un poste is a defined role within an organization. Le travail is broader and can refer to the activity itself. They may overlap in everyday speech, but compare Je cherche un emploi, Je postule à ce poste and Ce travail exige de la concentration.
Postuler, not “appliquer” for a job
To say “apply for a job,” use postuler à un emploi, postuler pour un emploi or poser sa candidature à un poste. OQLF accepts several constructions with postuler; do not mistake one classroom formula for the only valid form. In this sense, appliquer pour un emploi is discouraged as an English calque in Québec French.
Entretien or entrevue?
Un entretien d'embauche is understood broadly. OQLF also records une entrevue d'embauche and une entrevue d'emploi for Québec/Canada. Learn both so you can recognize either wording in an announcement or conversation. Un CV is the applicant's document; un résumé means a summary of a subject, not a CV in the OQLF entry.

- Choose emploi, poste or travail: Je cherche un ___ à temps partiel.
- Complete the collocation: J'ai répondu ___ une offre d'emploi.
- Rewrite without the English calque: J'ai appliqué pour ce poste.
- Give a Canadian French alternative to un entretien d'embauche.

- Choose the right word: J'ai joint mon CV / résumé à ma candidature.

Answers and explanations
- poste: the sentence describes a particular role and its duties. Ce poste comprend la gestion des commandes.
- emploi is the most direct choice: Je cherche un emploi à temps partiel. Un poste à temps partiel can also work if a particular role is meant; context matters.
- à: répondre à une offre d'emploi.
- For example: J'ai posé ma candidature à ce poste. J'ai postulé à ce poste also works. Both avoid the discouraged calque.
- Une entrevue d'emploi or une entrevue d'embauche. Both are recorded for Québec/Canada usage.
- L'échéance: échéance is feminine, and la becomes l' before the vowel.
- CV: it names the document presenting a candidate's experience and skills. In French, résumé normally names a summary.
- She says she answered questions by email and forwarded complex requests to her supervisor. Those actions make her experience concrete.
- For example: Pourriez-vous préciser l'horaire de ce poste ? The conditional pourriez-vous makes a courteous request; other natural polite questions are possible.
Make this vocabulary stick in ten minutes
First, select six words that match your own life and write one true sentence for each. Next, hide the French column and recall the word with its article. Then rewrite two dialogue lines for a different job and say them aloud. Tomorrow, do the nine exercises without looking at the table; three days later, repeat only the items you missed. Our vocabulary study sheet gives a broader review method. You can also practise extracting precise details with the TCF Canada reading guide or switch contexts with our housing vocabulary guide. InfinLume's TCF Canada practice covers reading and listening; this page does not imply that the app evaluates your speaking.
