TCF Canada Housing Vocabulary: Learn It in Context
Learn French housing words through useful phrases, a written rental-viewing dialogue, common confusions, and exercises with explained answers.

Housing vocabulary is useful when you need to understand an advertisement, ask about a flat, or explain a problem at home. For TCF Canada preparation, learn these words as small, reusable sentences rather than as an English-to-French list. This is an original learning set, not an official TCF vocabulary list or a past exam question.
Start with the words that make a housing conversation work
Say the article aloud with each noun: un logement, not just logement. The article helps you choose the right pronoun and adjective later.
| French | Meaning and useful context | Example |
|---|---|---|
| un logement (m.) | a place to live; a broad term | Je cherche un logement près du centre. I am looking for a place near the centre. |
| un appartement (m.) | an apartment; a more specific kind of dwelling | L'appartement est au deuxième étage. |
| une chambre (f.) | a bedroom; sometimes a room offered separately | Il y a deux chambres dans l'appartement. |
| une pièce (f.) | a room in the general sense | Cette pièce sert de bureau. This room is used as an office. |
| une cuisine (f.) | a kitchen | La cuisine donne sur la cour. |
| une salle de bains (f.) | a bathroom | La salle de bains est à côté de la chambre. |
| un quartier (m.) | a neighbourhood | Le quartier est calme le soir. |
| une annonce (f.) | a listing or advertisement | J'ai vu votre annonce hier. |
| une visite (f.) | a viewing | Est-il possible de faire une visite samedi ? |
| un loyer (m.) | rent, the price paid | Quel est le loyer mensuel ? |
| un bail (m.; plural des baux) | a lease or rental agreement | Je voudrais lire le bail avant de le signer. |
| un locataire, une locataire | a tenant | La locataire signale une panne de chauffage. |
| un propriétaire, une propriétaire | an owner; often the person you speak with about a rental | Le propriétaire organise les visites. |
| une panne (f.) | a breakdown or failure of equipment | Il y a une panne de chauffage. |
| une réparation (f.) | a repair | Quand la réparation est-elle prévue ? |
Make the words usable: six sentence patterns
- Chercher un logement dans un quartier: Nous cherchons un logement dans un quartier bien desservi. Use dans for the area you want to live in.
- Répondre à une annonce: Je vous écris au sujet de votre annonce. A polite opening for a message.
- Visiter un appartement: Pourrions-nous visiter l'appartement jeudi ? Pourrions-nous is a courteous way to ask.
- Demander ce qui est compris: Le chauffage est-il compris dans le loyer ? Ask; do not assume what a quoted rent includes.
- Signer un bail et payer un loyer: Nous signerons le bail vendredi et paierons le loyer à la date indiquée. Notice the different verbs.
- Signaler une panne: Je vous contacte pour signaler une panne de chauffage. This gives the purpose of a service message immediately.
An original written dialogue: arranging a visit
This is a practice conversation, not a transcript or timed speaking model. Read each line once for meaning, then cover the English table above and retell the exchange in your own words.
Samira: Bonjour, je vous appelle au sujet de l'appartement annoncé hier. Est-il toujours disponible ?
M. Moreau: Bonjour. Oui, il est toujours disponible. Souhaitez-vous le visiter ?
Samira: Oui, volontiers. Pourrions-nous faire une visite samedi matin ?
M. Moreau: Samedi à dix heures me convient.
Samira: Merci. L'annonce indique deux chambres. Y a-t-il aussi une pièce où je pourrais travailler ?
M. Moreau: Il y a un petit espace près du salon; vous pourrez le voir pendant la visite.
Samira: Très bien. Le chauffage est-il compris dans le loyer indiqué ?
M. Moreau: Je vais vérifier l'annonce et vous confirmer ce point par message.
Samira: Parfait. Pourriez-vous aussi m'envoyer l'adresse ?
M. Moreau: Bien sûr. À samedi.
What to notice: Samira asks one question at a time. She does not treat an unclear detail as a fact. Je vais vérifier ... et vous confirmer is also a useful phrase when you do not know an answer yet.
Common confusions that change your meaning
Logement or loyer?
Le logement is the place; le loyer is the rent paid for it. Say Le logement est lumineux but Le loyer est élevé. The OQLF explicitly distinguishes these two ideas.
Pièce or chambre?
Une pièce is a general room. Une chambre is a bedroom or a room described as such. If an advertisement says trois pièces, do not automatically translate that as three bedrooms; ask what the rooms are.
Louer from whose point of view?
Louer can appear in a tenant's or an owner's story. Remove doubt with prendre un appartement en location (as a tenant) or mettre un appartement en location (as an owner). Un bail is the agreement, while un loyer is the amount paid. In a real rental, check the actual documents rather than relying on vocabulary alone.
Try retrieval before you look at the answers
- Fill in the noun and article: Je cherche ___ près de l'université. (a place to live)
- Choose logement or loyer: Le ___ est de 900 dollars par mois.
- Choose pièce or chambre: La petite ___ sert de bureau; on n'y dort pas.
- Complete the collocation: Nous aimerions ___ l'appartement avant de prendre une décision.
- Ask politely in French: “Is the heating included in the rent?”
- Write one sentence to report a heating breakdown to the owner, using signaler.
- In the dialogue, did M. Moreau confirm that heating is included?
- Replace the vague Je loue cet appartement with a sentence that clearly says you are the tenant.
Answers with reasons
- un logement: the broad noun for a place to live; Je cherche un logement près de l'université.
- loyer: a monthly amount is rent, not the dwelling; Le loyer est de 900 dollars par mois.
- pièce: this is a room used as an office, not a bedroom by description.
- visiter: Nous aimerions visiter l'appartement. A visite is the viewing; visiter is the verb.
- Le chauffage est-il compris dans le loyer ? This asks about inclusion without presuming the answer.
- For example: Bonjour, je vous écris pour signaler une panne de chauffage dans l'appartement. The opening and purpose are clear; other polite versions are possible.
- No. He says he will check and confirm by message. Distinguish a promised confirmation from a confirmed detail.
- For example: Je prends cet appartement en location. This identifies the tenant's perspective; the original sentence does not.
A ten-minute study routine
On day one, choose eight nouns and say each with its article and one original sentence. On day two, hide the French column and reconstruct the six sentence patterns from an English cue. On day three, retell the dialogue with a different neighbourhood, rent and appointment time; then answer the eight questions without looking back. Revisit only the words you missed a week later. For a broader method, use our TCF Canada vocabulary study sheet. Try spotting these terms in written material with our reading practice guide, or continue with work vocabulary. If you want a practice activity after studying, InfinLume's TCF Canada practice currently covers reading and listening; it is not a speaking evaluator.
