French Transport and City Vocabulary for Routes and Changes

Learn French for stops, platforms, transfers and travel notices with original context, gender notes and explained exercises.

City travel in French is more than naming a bus or train. You need to understand where to board, whether you must change services and how a disruption changes your route. This guide teaches those actions through a fictional journey.

Follow a journey from start to finish

Use the city around the route

Find the way

Un itinéraire (m.) is a route to follow; une direction (f.) tells you which way; un carrefour (m.) is where roads meet; un trottoir (m.) is the pavement for pedestrians. Un passage piéton (m.) is a pedestrian crossing; une entrée (f.) is where you enter.

Buy and validate a journey

The answer changes by operator. Un horaire (m.) is a timetable; un départ (m.) is a departure; une arrivée (f.) is an arrival.

Handle a change

Une perturbation (f.) interrupts normal service; un détour (m.) takes a route away from the direct one; un raccourci (m.) is a shorter path; un remplacement (m.) substitutes for something. This is a fictional sentence; for a real trip, confirm that a replacement service actually exists. Une mise à jour (f.) may change an earlier announcement, so check when the notice was posted.

Un arrêt is a stopping place for public transport, while un quai is the platform area at a station. A correspondance connects one service with another: Je change de ligne à la gare is a simple way to explain the action. Avoid treating correspondance as a letter exchange in a travel notice, though Larousse records that separate sense too.

Original travel notice and exchange

Agent : Pas aujourd'hui. Descendez au Parc, puis suivez les panneaux. Consultez l'horaire actuel pour le retour.
Voyageuse : Merci. Je descends donc au Parc.

The notice distinguishes a temporary change from the normal route. Ne dessert pas means the service does not stop at that location in this notice. The traveller checks the affected stop and repeats the revised plan, rather than assuming her old route still works.

Retrieve before reading the key

  5. Ask politely whether line 4 stops at the library.

Answers and explanations

  3. At Parc, then follow the signs. The notice describes a temporary route.
  4. No. ne dessert pas l'arrêt Marché explicitly says it does not serve that stop today.
  5. For example, Excusez-moi, la ligne 4 s'arrête-t-elle près de la bibliothèque ? The question specifies the line and destination.

Transfer task: give a revised route

Tell a friend the fictional notice's new route in two sentences. The imperative descends and suis are familiar singular forms; use descendez and suivez for a polite or plural instruction.
