French Immigration and Integration Vocabulary for Everyday Notices

Understand administrative French for requests, forms and supporting documents through a careful fictional conversation and explained exercises.

Administrative French is easier when you separate a request, the document that supports it and the reply. This vocabulary lesson uses a fictional welcome-centre conversation to teach those distinctions. It does not describe eligibility for a real immigration programme.

Broaden the language: arriving, settling and participating

Find people and services

Un quartier (m.) is an area of a city; un organisme (m.) is an organisation; un service (m.) is the help or function it offers; une permanence (f.) can be a set time when staff are available. A natural question is Quel organisme propose une permanence dans mon quartier ? The answer depends on your actual location; the sentence is a reusable question, not a directory entry. Un bénévole or une bénévole may help at an association, but do not assume a volunteer can decide a formal application.

Build connections

Une rencontre (f.) is a meeting; une activité (f.) is something people do; un échange (m.) is a two-way conversation; une communauté (f.) is a group connected by place or shared interests. J'ai rencontré des voisins pendant une activité de quartier describes participation without suggesting a required “integration” test. L'intégration (f.) is a broad social word, not the name of one universal legal procedure. Say what happened concretely: J'ai rejoint un club de lecture or Je participe à des rencontres.

Understand an administrative message

Une notice (f.) gives instructions; une condition (f.) states something required; une exception (f.) limits a general statement; une échéance (f.) is a due date. Read Vous pouvez envoyer la demande jusqu'au 12 octobre, sauf si la notice indique une autre échéance pour votre catégorie as a conditional example, not an actual rule. Une confirmation (f.) records that something has been acknowledged; it is different from une décision (f.) about the request. J'ai reçu une confirmation de dépôt, mais pas encore de décision makes the distinction clear.

Larousse records un justificatif as a document that proves something and justificative as an adjective in pièce justificative. Grammar changes with the noun: un justificatif demandé, but une pièce justificative demandée. A démarche is a step or approach; it does not by itself say whether a person qualifies for anything.

Original dialogue: ask before assuming

Maya : Bonjour.

The exchange uses Quel document faut-il fournir ici ? to ask about one instruction. The agent points Maya to the responsible source instead of inventing a universal list. For a real application, distinguish the vocabulary in a notice from the rules of the programme.

Retrieve and apply

  1. Complete: Je dois ___ le formulaire avant de l'envoyer.
  2. Which noun is masculine: justificatif or pièce?
  3. Rewrite Donnez-moi le document as a polite, precise question about a named requirement.
  4. In the dialogue, who should confirm Maya's own enrolment situation?
  5. Does a language example here establish what evidence an immigration office accepts?

Answers and explanations

  1. remplir. One remplit un formulaire before submitting it.
  2. justificatif is masculine; pièce is feminine.
  3. For example, Pourriez-vous préciser quelle pièce justificative est demandée pour ce formulaire ? It names the requirement and asks for clarification politely.
  4. The course organisation. The welcome-centre agent can show the notice, but does not decide the course's rules.
  5. No. This is language practice. Current official programme instructions control real document requirements.

Transfer task: clarify a message

Imagine a fictional course emails Votre demande a bien été reçue. Write a reply that checks the next step without assuming admission. A model is Merci pour la confirmation de réception. Pourriez-vous m'indiquer quand une décision sera communiquée et où je peux consulter les conditions du cours ? Confirmation de réception acknowledges the message; décision remains pending.
