French-English Cognates in -tion: 12 Useful Nouns

Learn twelve French-English -tion noun pairs with articles, collocations, meaning traps and explained practice.

French -tion words can give English readers a useful head start, but the ending does not translate a sentence for you. Start with six verified pairs, then learn their articles and the verbs they occur with. The French nouns below are feminine; the context still decides which English wording fits.

la communication (f.)communicationla communication entre collègues
la population (f.)populationla population de la ville
l'éducation (f.)educationl'éducation des enfants
une tradition (f.)a traditionrespecter une tradition

These forms are useful precisely because they occur in different settings. Préparation can concern a meal, an event or a task; communication can concern an exchange rather than merely a device. A shared spelling does not promise that every English collocation will carry over. Check the verb and preposition beside each noun.

J'ai demandé des informations avant de faire une réservation. This means "I asked for information before making a booking." French can use plural des informations where English uses uncountable information. The natural verb combination is faire une réservation. In Nous cherchons une solution à ce problème, keep the French preposition à.

Related spelling, separate family: Une décision corresponds to "a decision," but it ends in -sion, not -tion. It is worth learning alongside this lesson because the phrase prendre une décision is useful. Do not count it as an example of the -tion ending.

The ending is a clue, not a guarantee

Here is a short connected example: Notre association prépare une invitation pour les voisins. La communication est simple : nous donnons la date, le lieu et une information sur l'activité. Après une discussion, nous prenons une décision sur l'organisation de la soirée. Most nouns look familiar, but the paragraph works because its French combinations do: donner une information, prendre une décision and l'organisation de la soirée. Try retelling it with réunion instead of soirée.

Une location is a rental or the act of renting in common contexts. English location usually means a place; for that sense, French may use un emplacement or un lieu. Even a genuine pair needs care: French attention shares the English meaning, but Fais attention ! is "Be careful!" rather than a command to "make attention." Check the whole phrase, not just the ending.

Try it: choose the French that fits

  1. "We need more information." Complete: Nous avons besoin de plus d'_____. Choose informations or invitations.
  2. Related -sion bonus: "She made a decision." Complete: Elle a _____ une décision. Choose fait or pris.
  3. "The rental starts tomorrow." Complete: La _____ commence demain. Choose location or situation.

Answers and why

  1. informations. Avoir besoin de plus d'informations asks for facts; invitations are invitations. English normally says "more information," without plural informations.
  2. pris. The idiomatic combination is prendre une décision, so the past form is elle a pris une décision.
  3. location. Here the subject is a rental. If you meant the position of a building, location would be a misleading translation.

Production check

Write two French sentences for this situation: your group is preparing a meeting and needs to decide the date. One possible answer is Nous préparons une réunion. Il faut prendre une décision sur la date. The first sentence uses a verb rather than forcing the noun préparation; the second uses the checked noun-verb pair prendre une décision. Another clear answer is valid if it preserves the intended meaning.

For another ending, continue with -ité and -ity pairs. The existing cognates index offers a broader reference; use a dictionary before reusing a word in a new context.
