French -ité and English -ity Cognates in Context
Use twelve selected -ité/-ity noun pairs in French sentences, with gender, sense differences and practice.
Many French nouns in -ité resemble English nouns in -ity. That resemblance helps recognition, but a good sentence still needs the right meaning, article and combination. These six selections are feminine nouns, not a rule for every word with these letters.

Capacité illustrates why a pair needs a context: a room's capacity is not the same sense as a person's ability. Liberté is often best rendered as freedom in ordinary prose even though English liberty is a related word. Study the meaning, not a single permanent English label.
Sécurité needs special attention: for passengers' physical protection, English often says safety; for protection against theft or an attack, it may say security. Priorité can mean an ordinary priority, but road contexts may call for English right of way. The pair gives a starting point; the surrounding nouns choose the translation.
One tempting mismatch
In a connected example, L'équipe organise une activité. Elle choisit une salle selon sa capacité et donne la priorité à la sécurité. La diversité des participants rend l'échange intéressant. The nouns work together in a planning situation. Notice selon sa capacité refers to how many people the room can hold, while la sécurité concerns people's safety. Rewrite this paragraph for a small outdoor event; you may need to change the nouns around the cognates, not just the cognates themselves.
L'actualité often means current events or news. It is not a general translation of English actuality. Thus Je suis l'actualité means that I follow the news. Compare this with other false friends before relying on visual similarity.
Practice in context
- Translate "an important responsibility" by completing une _____ importante: responsabilité or possibilité?
- "Passenger safety" is la _____ des passagers: sécurité or qualité?
- A friend says Je lis l'actualité tous les matins. Are they reading news or discussing "actuality" as a philosophical idea?
Answers and why
- responsabilité. It names a duty; possibilité names something that may be possible. Importante agrees with the feminine noun.
- sécurité. The context is passengers' safety. Qualité would mean quality, a different question.
- News or current events. The everyday phrase lire l'actualité concerns recent events; the familiar English look-alike is misleading here.
Production check
Write one sentence about a group's ability to choose. A possible answer is Le groupe a la capacité de choisir une autre activité. Avoir la capacité de means having the ability to do something; une autre activité supplies a concrete choice. If you mean the venue's maximum size, use la capacité de la salle instead.
