TEF Canada Reading Practice: Six Original Questions With Explanations
Learn evidence selection and distractor analysis through six original TEF Canada reading teaching questions with an explained answer key.
TEF Canada reading practice should teach you to select evidence, reject near-miss options and manage the 60-minute questionnaire. The current CCI test has 40 multiple-choice questions and lets you navigate within reading. Work through the original short passages below, then compare every answer with the exact phrase that supports it.
Current reading rules and a useful decision sequence
CCI gives 60 minutes for 40 reading questions, one correct option among four. Its current computer interface allows free navigation within the questionnaire. The public booklet shows varied reading purposes: everyday documents, missing words in context, rapid comparison of short texts or graphics, administrative and professional documents, and press articles. That booklet explicitly says its examples are not a complete test and do not represent the real test's difficulty. This page therefore teaches a method rather than predicting a score.
- Name the target: Is the question asking for a date, condition, main purpose, inference or author's attitude?
- Locate a supporting phrase: Read the relevant sentence and its qualification, especially words like sauf, seulement, à condition que and en revanche.
- Test all four options: Cross out a choice that is true in general but unsupported here, reverses a condition, or borrows words without preserving meaning.
- Move deliberately: If one item is consuming too much time, mark your uncertainty in your own practice notes and move on. The live reading interface permits return, but your remaining time does not reset.
Exercise 1: read a practical notice
Atelier de couture du quartier
La séance de samedi commencera à 10 h au lieu de 9 h, car la salle sera utilisée plus tôt pour une réunion. Les personnes déjà inscrites conservent leur place. Pour une nouvelle inscription, téléphonez avant jeudi 17 h. Les machines sont fournies, mais chaque participant doit apporter du tissu.
Question 1. What must a new participant do?
- A. Arrive at 9 h on Saturday.
- B. Call before Thursday at 17 h.
- C. Bring a sewing machine.
- D. Attend the earlier meeting.
Question 2. What changed?
- A. The session's start time.
- B. The price of the class.
- C. The registration deadline.
- D. The requirement to bring fabric.
Exercise 2: compare two offers
Offre A - Jardin partagé : Ouvert le mardi soir et le samedi matin. Outils prêtés sur place. Inscription gratuite, mais présence régulière demandée pendant la saison.
Offre B - Atelier balcon : Une séance unique le dimanche après-midi. Matériel fourni. Participation de 12 euros; aucune inscription annuelle.
Question 3. Lina can attend only on Sundays and wants one session, not a seasonal commitment. Which offer fits the stated constraints?
- A. A, because it is free.
- B. A, because tools are loaned.
- C. B, because it takes place on Sunday and is a single session.
- D. Neither, because both require annual registration.
Exercise 3: distinguish fact from proposal
La médiathèque du quartier ouvre aujourd'hui jusqu'à 18 h. Selon sa directrice, plusieurs habitants ont demandé une ouverture en soirée. Un essai le jeudi pourrait commencer l'année prochaine, si le budget et les horaires du personnel le permettent. Aucune date n'a encore été fixée.
Question 4. Which statement is supported?
- A. The library already opens late every Thursday.
- B. Evening opening is being considered, but has no fixed start date.
- C. The city has refused any schedule change.
- D. Staff have approved a new schedule.
Question 5. What limits the proposed trial?
- A. The number of books.
- B. Residents' interest.
- C. The budget and staff schedules.
- D. The current 18 h closing time alone.
Exercise 4: complete meaning, not just grammar
Le centre a reçu davantage de demandes que prévu. Il ouvrira donc un deuxième groupe, _____ le nombre de bénévoles soit suffisant.
Question 6. Which expression preserves the intended condition?
- A. à condition que
- B. parce que
- C. même si
- D. tandis que
Answer key: show the evidence and the distractor
- 1 - B. Pour une nouvelle inscription, téléphonez avant jeudi 17 h gives the action and deadline. A repeats the old 9 h time; C reverses “machines provided”; D confuses a room conflict with a participant requirement.
- 2 - A. commencera à 10 h au lieu de 9 h explicitly changes the start. The other facts appear in the notice, but no change to them is stated.
- 3 - C. B is a one-time Sunday session. A's free price is tempting but misses both the day and the regular-attendance condition. “No annual registration” is stated for B, so D is false.
- 4 - B. pourrait commencer makes the trial possible, not decided; aucune date removes a fixed start. A turns a proposal into a current fact.
- 5 - C. The passage says si le budget et les horaires du personnel le permettent. Requests from residents explain interest, not the named condition.
- 6 - A. à condition que le nombre de bénévoles soit suffisant makes volunteer availability a requirement for opening the second group. B would present it as a reason already true and would require a different verb mood; C would concede a contrary fact, also requiring a different mood; D would contrast simultaneous actions and would likewise require the indicative.
Turn the key into a study routine
For each error, write two short notes: the exact supporting phrase, and why your selected distractor seemed attractive. Then rewrite the question with a different condition and four new options. This tests whether you can transfer the reasoning to another text instead of remembering “1-B”. Practise some items with a timer only after you can explain the evidence; your own timing drill is not a replica of CCI's calibrated scoring.
CCI gives a point for a correct answer and zero for a wrong or blank one, but says raw correct totals are converted to calibrated final scores. Six original questions here cannot estimate your TEF score or NCLC level. For actual public samples, use the official preparation page.
