TCF Canada Writing Mistakes: Before-and-After French Fixes

Spot task-fulfilment, register, agreement, tense, negation and clarity problems in short original French snippets, with explanations and an editing exercise.

The most useful TCF Canada writing edits often start before grammar: check who will read the text, what the instruction asks that reader to learn or do, and whether your response actually delivers it. Then repair language errors that make the meaning uncertain. The French lines below are short, original editing examples, not full model responses.

First, separate exam requirements from editing choices

In TCF Canada, Task 1 is a 60-to-120-word message to a recipient whose status is specified. Task 2 is a 120-to-150-word experience or story for several readers, accompanied by comments, opinions or arguments serving an objective. Task 3 is a 120-to-180-word text comparing two viewpoints in two documents and giving your opinion for an indicated audience. The complete writing section lasts 60 minutes. FEI lists clarity, requested information, coherence, comparison, argument and task-appropriate language among the abilities assessed.

FEI also warns that a writing production could receive “A1 non atteint” in cases including illegibility on paper, not respecting the required word lengths, being off topic or leaving one or more tasks undone. That is a conditional warning from FEI, not a fixed points deduction for a particular typo. We cannot infer an official penalty for each example below. For length, check the complete submitted text. FEI's published sample defines a word as a group of signs between two spaces; the short snippets here are intentionally not long enough to be task responses.

Four task-fulfilment mistakes to catch before proofreading

1. Naming a change without giving the new information

Task 1 context: A colleague needs the revised time and room of a meeting.

Before: La réunion a changé. À demain !

After: La réunion prévue mardi à 18 h aura lieu jeudi à 19 h, dans la salle B. Peux-tu me confirmer que tu as reçu ce message ?

The first sentence is grammatical, but it leaves the reader unable to attend. The repair supplies the old and new schedule, the room and a confirmation request. It is a content omission, not a conjugation mistake; expand the rest of a real response to the Task 1 range.

2. Recounting an event without serving the Task 2 objective

Task 2 context: A neighborhood bulletin asks you to report on a clothing-swap event and recommend whether to repeat it.

Before: Samedi, j'ai apporté deux vestes. J'ai parlé avec trois voisins et je suis rentré à midi.

After: Samedi, j'ai apporté deux vestes et discuté avec trois voisins. L'échange a permis de réutiliser des vêtements en bon état ; je recommande une nouvelle séance, avec des tailles mieux indiquées.

The first snippet is a coherent mini-story, but it has no assessment or recommendation. The second connects an observed event to an opinion and a practical objective. It is only a snippet; a complete Task 2 response still needs the named group of readers and 120 to 150 words.

3. Turning Task 3 into a one-source opinion

Task 3 context: In an invented pair of documents, one author supports later park opening hours; the other worries about noise for nearby residents.

Before: Le parc devrait rester ouvert plus tard, car les familles en profiteraient.

After: Le premier document défend une fermeture plus tardive pour faciliter les sorties en famille, tandis que le second craint davantage de bruit pour les riverains. À mon avis, un essai limité serait possible si la ville consultait ces derniers.

The first sentence may be a valid personal view, but it never presents the second source. The revision attributes both viewpoints before stating a position. A real Task 3 answer must use the actual documents supplied, not these invented facts, and must meet the complete task's range. See the worked Task 3 guide for full source texts and a counted response.

4. Changing the source's position while paraphrasing

Task 3 context: An invented document proposes a trial of shared bicycles, conditional on regular maintenance.

Before: Le document affirme que les vélos partagés sont dangereux et qu'il faut interdire ce service.

After: Le document soutient un essai de vélos partagés, à condition de prévoir un entretien régulier.

Here the problem is not style: the before sentence reverses a conditional endorsement into a ban. When revising, underline each source's claim, condition and reason, then check every paraphrase against them. Invented source details in this exercise illustrate the check; they are not FEI source material.

Five language and clarity repairs

5. Mixing familiar and formal address

Context: A learner writes to a library director they do not know.

Before: Bonjour Madame, tu peux me dire si la salle est libre ?

After: Bonjour Madame, pourriez-vous me dire si la salle est disponible ?

Tu and vous are both grammatically possible in French; the problem here is their fit with this particular recipient and the mismatch within a formal message. In a message to a close friend, a familiar form could be right. The conditional question is one polite option, not an official formula.

6. Missing subject and adjective agreement

Before: Les nouvelles affiches est lisible.

After: Les nouvelles affiches sont lisibles.

The plural subject les affiches requires sont; the adjective describing them is plural too. Nouvelles already agrees with the feminine plural noun. Check all words linked to the subject, rather than changing only the verb.

7. Losing the time sequence

Before: Hier, j'ai visité le marché et je rencontre la responsable.

After: Hier, j'ai visité le marché et j'ai rencontré la responsable.

Hier puts both completed events in the past, so the present je rencontre is inconsistent with the intended timeline. Mixing tenses is not inherently wrong: a present-tense comment about what you think now can follow a past-tense account. Ask what time each verb actually describes.

8. Combining two negative forms incorrectly

Before: Je n'ai pas reçu aucune réponse.

After: Je n'ai reçu aucune réponse.

In standard written French, ne ... aucune expresses “no answer”; adding pas here is not the intended construction. Alternatively, Je n'ai pas reçu de réponse is grammatical. These are genuine grammar alternatives, not a requirement to use one memorized sentence.

9. Leaving a pronoun with two possible referents

Before: La coordinatrice a parlé à la bénévole quand elle est arrivée en retard.

After, if the volunteer was late: La bénévole est arrivée en retard ; la coordinatrice lui a ensuite parlé.

The before sentence can be grammatical, but elle might refer to either woman. The repair clarifies one intended meaning. If it was the coordinator who arrived late, name her instead. This is a clarity choice, not an automatic grammar fault.

Editing exercise: six short lines

Try each repair before reading the key. These lines are deliberately brief fragments of imagined responses, not full task answers.

  1. Task 1: To a new landlord, asking about a key: Salut Monsieur, tu peux me donner le clé demain ?
  2. Task 1: A workshop moved from Friday to Saturday: L'atelier est déplacé. À bientôt.
  3. Task 2: A community bulletin wants a recommendation after a cleanup: Nous avons ramassé des déchets près du canal. Ensuite, nous sommes partis.
  4. Task 3: Document A favors a trial of free buses; document B opposes it because of cost: Les deux documents veulent rendre les bus gratuits immédiatement.
  5. Agreement: Ces nouvelles activités est utile pour les familles.
  6. Timeline: La semaine dernière, nous avons organisé une réunion et nous présentons notre projet aux voisins. The presentation also happened last week.

Suggested key and reasons

  1. Bonjour Monsieur, pourriez-vous me remettre la clé demain ? The noun is feminine (la clé), and vous suits this unfamiliar landlord. A friendly relationship could justify a different register, but the article's scenario has not established one.
  2. L'atelier prévu vendredi aura lieu samedi à 10 h dans la salle C. Merci de me dire si vous pourrez venir. A usable change notice needs the new date, time and location; the added details are invented for this exercise.
  3. Nous avons ramassé des déchets près du canal ; une autre matinée serait utile pour couvrir la rive opposée. The added assessment and recommendation serve the bulletin's purpose. You would still develop this into a complete 120-to-150-word account.
  4. Le premier document propose d'essayer des bus gratuits, tandis que le second s'y oppose en raison du coût. The original falsely attributes immediate support to both. A full response would next give your own argued position.
  5. Ces nouvelles activités sont utiles pour les familles. Activités is plural, so the verb and descriptive adjective must be plural.
  6. La semaine dernière, nous avons organisé une réunion et présenté notre projet aux voisins. Both events belong to the same completed past sequence. Present tense could work only if you meant a separate present event.

A final revision pass that takes one question at a time

  1. Task fit: Mark the recipient or audience, every required action, and the response's actual purpose. For Task 3, mark where each document appears and where your own view begins.
  2. Meaning: Check dates, locations, quantities, source positions and pronoun referents. A polished sentence can still transmit the wrong fact.
  3. Language: Review agreement, verb time, negation and register. Do not “correct” every stylistic alternative as if it were an error.
  4. Length: Count the whole response after the last edit, including title or greeting if submitted. Use the Canada range for that task, leaving enough room to keep all required content. If a Task 3 instruction specifies separate lengths for the source comparison and your opinion, check those parts individually too.
