TCF Canada Speaking Task 1: Guided Interview Practice

TCF Canada speaking Task 1 is a short guided interview, not a two-minute speech to memorize. An examiner asks about you and follows up; your job is to understand each question and give an answer that invites a natural exchange. Here is the verified format, an original fictional interview, and a way to practise responding when the next question changes direction.
What happens in TCF Canada speaking Task 1?
FEI calls Task 1 an entretien dirigé: a guided interview with an examiner you do not know. For TCF Canada, it lasts two minutes and has no preparation time. The oral test is face to face and contains three tasks. The current manual distinguishes this Canada format from TCF IRN, whose Task 1 duration is different. Always check the variant you are taking rather than borrowing a timing from another TCF page.
FEI describes the overall speaking test as assessing, among other abilities, whether you can talk about yourself and your family or professional environment. It does not prescribe a fixed list of personal questions or a model introduction to recite. A useful answer therefore does two things: it responds directly to the question you heard, then adds one relevant detail the examiner can explore. If you are asked where you live, a rehearsed speech about every job you have held would miss the point.
A response pattern you can adapt
Try answer, detail, opening. Give the essential fact first, add a concrete detail, and leave a natural path for a follow-up. This is a learning device, not an official scoring formula. If the examiner asks a narrow factual question, a short accurate response may be enough; if the question invites description, develop it. Do not force all three parts into every turn.
- Answer: J'habite à Halifax depuis un an. The listener knows immediately where and for how long.
- Detail: Je partage un appartement près de mon travail. This gives the answer a real setting.
- Opening: Le quartier est calme, mais je découvre encore la ville. The examiner might ask what you like there or how you travel.
A truthful answer is easier to adjust than a polished fictional biography. If your real situation is private, practise with ordinary details you are comfortable sharing. The example below uses a fictional candidate so it can demonstrate the interaction without implying that any particular background is expected.
Original fictional interview: respond to the question in front of you
Practice setting: Maya is a fictional candidate. The examiner's questions and Maya's answers are invented for teaching. This is an untimed written dialogue, not a transcript or a model proven to fit the two-minute test.
Examinateur : Bonjour. Vous pouvez vous présenter ?
Maya : Bonjour. Je m'appelle Maya. Je vis à Halifax depuis un an et je travaille dans une librairie de quartier. J'aime bien ce travail parce que je parle avec des personnes très différentes.
Examinateur : Que faites-vous exactement dans cette librairie ?
Maya : J'accueille les clients et je les aide à trouver des livres. Je m'occupe aussi des commandes. Par exemple, hier, j'ai cherché un album pour une cliente qui voulait offrir un cadeau à son neveu.
Examinateur : Et qu'est-ce qui est difficile dans ce travail ?
Maya : Quand il y a beaucoup de monde, je dois répondre vite à plusieurs demandes. Au début, c'était stressant. Maintenant, je note les questions et je vérifie les informations avant de conseiller quelqu'un.
Examinateur : Vous avez dit que vous habitez à Halifax. Comment allez-vous au travail ?
Maya : Je prends le bus la plupart du temps. Le trajet dure environ vingt minutes, alors j'en profite souvent pour lire quelques pages. Si je commence très tôt, je marche jusqu'à un autre arrêt où les bus passent plus souvent.
Examinateur : Qu'aimez-vous faire quand vous ne travaillez pas ?
Maya : Je cuisine avec des amis le week-end. Nous choisissons une recette simple et chacun apporte quelque chose. La dernière fois, nous avons préparé une soupe et nous avons mangé ensemble après une promenade.
Examinateur : Vous préférez cuisiner chez vous ou sortir au restaurant ?
Maya : En général, je préfère cuisiner chez moi, parce que nous pouvons prendre notre temps. Mais pour découvrir une cuisine que je ne connais pas, j'aime aussi demander une recommandation et essayer un petit restaurant.
What the follow-ups teach
The examiner's second question grows from Maya's mention of the bookstore; it asks for what she actually does, not another self-introduction. Maya gives two duties and one small example. The difficulty question asks for a challenge, so she describes a past problem and what she does now. That answer is more informative than C'est difficile, mais ça va. Later, the examiner returns to her city and asks about transport. Maya follows the new question rather than trying to finish a prepared story about work.
The final two turns show a useful difference between Qu'aimez-vous faire ? and Vous préférez X ou Y ? One invites an activity and a detail; the other asks her to compare and choose. Her answer stays on the comparison. None of these turns requires advanced vocabulary for its own sake. What matters for this practice is whether a listener can follow her answer and ask the next question naturally.
When the interview does not follow your script
Prepare flexible facts and examples about familiar parts of your life, not complete paragraphs. A small bank might include where you live, what occupies your week, a recent activity, something you enjoy, and one ordinary challenge. Practise expressing each fact in different ways. For example, Je travaille dans une librairie can lead to what you do there, why you chose it, your schedule, or a memorable customer interaction. You cannot know which direction an examiner will take.
If you do not catch a question, repair the conversation. Pardon, vous pouvez répéter la question ? asks for repetition. Vous voulez dire pendant la semaine ou le week-end ? checks a specific ambiguity. Then answer once you understand. Repeating a memorized answer to an unheard question does not solve the communication problem. Similarly, if you start a sentence and need to correct it, a simple Je veux dire... can keep you moving.

Practise, then check your response
Ask a partner to choose questions you have not seen, including follow-ups based on your own answers. If you practise alone, write a question on a card, answer it aloud, and then ask yourself Pourquoi ? Comment ? Depuis quand ? Avec qui ? as appropriate. This self-practice is useful, but it cannot fully replace the unpredictability of another person. During a two-minute practice interview, focus on listening and responding; a fixed word count is not an FEI requirement for this speaking task.
Exercise 1: make the answer match the question
Rewrite each weak reply in natural French. You may use your own facts; the sample keys are examples, not the only correct answers.
- Examinateur : Qu'est-ce que vous aimez faire après le travail ? Candidat : Je travaille de neuf heures à cinq heures.
- Examinateur : Depuis quand habitez-vous ici ? Candidat : J'habite près de la gare.
- Examinateur : Pourquoi apprenez-vous le français ? Candidat : Oui, j'apprends le français.
Possible answers and reasons
- Après le travail, j'aime marcher dans mon quartier. Cela m'aide à me détendre avant de rentrer. It names an activity and explains it; working hours answer a different question.
- J'habite ici depuis huit mois. Avant, je vivais dans une autre ville. Depuis quand needs a starting point or duration, not just a location.
- J'apprends le français parce que je veux mieux communiquer avec mes collègues francophones. Pourquoi calls for a reason, not confirmation.
Exercise 2: continue the exchange
A fictional candidate says: Le samedi, je vais souvent au marché avec mon frère. Write one plausible examiner follow-up and a direct answer with a detail. For example: Qu'achetez-vous au marché ? / Nous achetons surtout des légumes de saison. Mon frère choisit souvent les pommes, parce qu'il prépare des desserts. The follow-up is connected to what the candidate actually said. A random question about professional plans would not test the same listening skill.
After each attempt, ask: Did I answer the question's who, where, when, how, or why? Did I add a concrete detail only where it helped? Could I explain one word I used if asked? Did I correct a misunderstanding instead of pretending to understand? These checks are for self-study, not an official FEI scoring grid.
