TCF Canada Results: Timeline, Two-Year Validity, and the 20-Day Retake Rule

Three clocks matter after TCF Canada: FEI says results are sent to the test centre within 15 working days after FEI receives the session materials; the certificate is valid for two years from the date the results are issued; and the current rule requires 20 days between two sittings of the same TCF version. None of those clocks should be replaced with “about two weeks after my exam” or the older 30-day retake rule.

Result timing is easy to misstate because the candidate, the centre, FEI, and IRCC each control a different part of the process. The safest plan is to keep the official wording attached to the correct event.

The TCF Canada result timeline

Does “15 working days” begin on test day?

Not according to FEI's published wording. The TCF Canada page says results are sent to the test centre within 15 working days “from the date on which France Éducation international receives the papers.” The current candidate manual similarly ties the period to FEI's receipt of session material.

That is why an honest answer to “What date will I receive my TCF Canada result?” has two parts:

1. FEI publishes a processing period measured from its receipt of the session materials.
2. Candidate Manual Version P says candidates retrieve the result through their TCF-Candidat account or through the test centre; follow the access instructions for your session.

A centre may give you a useful expected window based on its actual workflow. Treat that as an operational estimate, not a new FEI guarantee. Create or retain any TCF-Candidat account details supplied for the session.

When does the two-year validity period start?

FEI says the TCF Canada certificate is valid for two years from the date the results are issued. The result document carries its own dates, so use those dates as the source of truth.

This is distinct from the result-processing clock:

• the processing period concerns when FEI sends the result to the centre;
• the validity period concerns how long the issued result remains valid;
• the receiving authority decides at which application checkpoints the result must still be valid.

How IRCC applies the two-year rule for Express Entry

IRCC currently states that approved language-test results must be less than two years old when you:

• complete your Express Entry profile; and
• submit your application for permanent residence.

IRCC warns that an application for permanent residence with expired language results will be refused. It advises candidates whose results may expire before application to be tested again, apply before expiry, or—if already invited and unable to apply with valid results—decline the invitation and return to the pool.

This creates a planning problem that is not visible in the phrase “valid for two years.” A result can be valid when you create the profile but too close to expiry for a later permanent-residence submission. Build a buffer around the later checkpoint rather than treating the profile date as the finish line.

The current TCF Canada retake rule: 20 days

FEI's current French-language TCF Canada page says candidates may sit TCF Canada as many times as they wish but must wait 20 days between two sittings of that TCF version. Candidate Manual Version P, dated April 2026, gives the same-version 20-day rule.

The precise wording matters:

• it is an interval between sittings, not a promise that a seat will be available on day 20;
• the centre still controls its dates, capacity, registration deadline, and payment process;
• TCF Canada includes four mandatory abilities, so a retake is not advertised by FEI as a one-skill retake;
• older guidance that says 30 days should not override the current TCF Canada page and current manual.

Before paying for a new session, ask the approved centre to confirm that the proposed date satisfies the current interval based on your previous sitting.

When should you retake TCF Canada?

The official 20-day interval defines the earliest permitted spacing; it does not say that every candidate should test again at the first possible moment. Use evidence from the component result and your practice to decide.
