French -ment Cognates: Adverbs, Nouns, False Friends

The letters -ment do two different jobs in this French-English lesson. French often uses them to form an adverb such as clairement; other French -ment words are nouns resembling English -ment nouns, such as gouvernement. The spelling alone does not tell you which job a word has.

French -ment adverbs: ask "how?"

The OQLF guide to adverbs in -ment explains that many are formed from the feminine adjective, with exceptions and special spellings. That is a useful formation clue, not permission to add -ment to any adjective you see. Learn the attested word first.

More checked adverbs show how varied the English side can be: sérieusement can mean seriously, facilement means easily, normalement means normally, and simplement can mean simply or just. French -ment does not map to English noun -ment in these words; English usually uses an -ly adverb or another expression.

French -ment nouns: ask "what?"

All four listed nouns are masculine, but that fact comes from checking each noun; it is not a gender rule for every ending. Appartement is a concrete place, not an adverb and not an abstract "-ment action" word.

Another four checked nouns widen the picture: un équipement can mean equipment, un traitement can mean treatment, un engagement can mean a commitment or engagement, and un paiement is a payment. Notice that English equipment is normally a mass noun, while French can use un équipement for a set of equipment. Engagement has several senses, so translate the whole situation.

Two deceptive adverbs

Here is a short workplace scene: Le gouvernement présente un projet de développement. Notre équipe lit le document attentivement, puis explique clairement les changements. Nous pouvons éventuellement demander un autre rendez-vous. The nouns name entities or processes; the adverbs describe actions. In the last sentence, éventuellement makes the extra appointment a possibility, not an event guaranteed to occur later.

Actuellement means currently or at present, not English actually. Éventuellement means possibly or if need be in many contexts, not automatically "eventually"; finalement is a common choice for "eventually" or "in the end."

1. In Elle répond clairement, is clairement an adverb or a noun?
2. Translate "The government is here": Le _____ est ici.
3. Translate "We are currently in the city": Nous sommes _____ en ville. Choose actuellement or éventuellement.

Answers and why

1. An adverb. It describes how she answers. English normally uses clearly, not a noun ending in -ment.
2. gouvernement. It is a masculine noun; le makes that job visible.
3. actuellement. It gives a present-time meaning. Éventuellement would suggest possibility or a condition.

Production check

Write one sentence with a noun and an adverb from this page. A possible answer is Le paiement arrivera probablement demain. Le paiement names the payment; probablement signals uncertainty. Replacing it with actuellement would change the time meaning and would not fit demain in this sentence.
