Use paired French -isme and -iste words to distinguish ideas, people and adjectives in context.
French -isme and -iste can help you separate an idea or field from a person associated with it. English often has -ism and -ist counterparts. These are selected, checked families; neither ending creates a valid translation automatically.
Four families, two jobs

These entries name real movements and positions; the lesson concerns how the words function, not an endorsement or a definition of any ideology. Some -iste forms are both nouns and adjectives. Une activiste names a person; une démarche activiste describes an approach. Use the sentence to decide the grammatical job.
The noun for a person can often use either un or une without a spelling change: un journaliste, une journaliste. Do not infer someone's gender from the English -ist ending. Optimiste and réaliste can also be adjectives: des projets réalistes. In English, the corresponding adjective is often realistic, not realist.
Do not force a pair where the word has another job
Connected example: La journaliste interroge une activiste. Elles discutent du féminisme et du rôle des médias. La journaliste reste optimiste : un dialogue réaliste est possible. Four similar endings do different work: journaliste and activiste are people, féminisme is a topic, and optimiste and réaliste describe an outlook and a dialogue. Translate those roles before the individual words.
Un ou une artiste means an artist, while artistique means artistic. There is no need to invent an -isme word each time you find -iste. Context also matters inside a family: touriste names a traveler, while tourisme can describe travel activity or an industry.
