French -ique Cognates: Adjectives and Meaning Shifts

The French ending -ique often points toward an English adjective in -ic or -ical, but one spelling change does not cover every meaning. Learn these adjectives with a noun they can describe. Most forms below look the same with masculine and feminine nouns; the plural adds -s.

Dramatique is a useful limit to the pattern. In theatre, une œuvre dramatique can be a dramatic work. For serious consequences, English may need terrible or grave, not "dramatic." The dictionary lists distinct senses; do not give one translation to every occurrence.

French économique can describe the economy or something inexpensive: une étude économique and une voiture économique call for different English choices. Likewise historique can relate to history or to an event considered significant. Let the noun settle the translation.

Try this short description: Notre groupe prépare un projet artistique. Une réponse automatique nous confirme la réservation. Nous organisons ensuite un débat politique sur l'accès à la culture. The adjectives modify three different nouns; their meanings are not interchangeable. Replace projet with plural projets and make the adjective plural too: des projets artistiques.

Politique also functions as a noun. La politique can mean politics or policy, depending on context, while un choix politique means a political choice. Un scientifique can be a scientist. A matching ending alone cannot tell you whether a word is an adjective or a noun.

2. Translate "practical solutions": des solutions _____. Should the adjective have a final s?
3. In une voiture économique, does économique most likely mean "economic" (about the economy) or "economical" (cheap to run)?

Answers and why

1. scientifique. It describes a method based on science. The feminine noun does not change the adjective's singular spelling.
2. pratiques. Solutions is plural, and the adjective agrees: des solutions pratiques.
3. Economical. With a car, the everyday meaning concerns cost or consumption. With une analyse économique, the economy sense is more natural.

Production check

Describe a museum visit with two different -ique adjectives. One possible answer is Nous avons vu un document historique et une exposition artistique. The first describes the document's relation to history; the second describes the exhibition's artistic character. If you intend "a historic event," explain why the event is noteworthy rather than relying on the English sound alone.
