French -aire and English -ary: Useful Cognates
Study twelve selected -aire/-ary adjective pairs, word-class traps and context-sensitive translation.
Some French adjectives ending in -aire line up with English adjectives ending in -ary. This is a recognition clue for selected words, not a rule for translating every word with either ending. The best practice is to learn each adjective beside a noun and watch for a meaning shift.

The singular French adjective keeps the same spelling with masculine and feminine nouns in these examples: un emploi temporaire, une solution temporaire. In the plural, add -s: des emplois temporaires. The English side is not always the nearest look-alike: planétaire can mean global rather than literally planetary, and extraordinaire can mean exceptional. A tempting related pair, obligatoire/obligatory, has French -oire, not -aire; learn it as a separate comparison.
Similar letters, a different word class
Le vocabulaire is a masculine noun meaning vocabulary, not an adjective meaning "vocabulary-like." Un annuaire is often a directory or yearbook; it is not the everyday adjective "annual." For that adjective, use annuel/annuelle. The letters -aire do not guarantee an English -ary meaning or an adjective at all.

Le centre organise une activité littéraire temporaire. L'inscription est nécessaire, mais la réunion complémentaire reste facultative. Une question secondaire pourra être discutée plus tard. The message distinguishes necessary, temporary and secondary features. It also shows why a phrase matters: réunion complémentaire is an additional meeting here, while deux approches complémentaires would be approaches that work well together.

Answers
- temporaire. It means lasting for a limited time. Imaginaire means imagined or fictional.
- secondaires. The adjective agrees with plural questions.
- un rapport annuel. Annuel means annual; annuaire is a directory or yearbook.
- Working together. This is the complementary sense. In another context, complémentaire can instead mean additional; read the noun and purpose.
Production check
Write a two-sentence notice using one necessary step and one optional extra. A possible answer is L'inscription est nécessaire. Une réunion complémentaire est proposée aux personnes intéressées.
