French Agreement and Disagreement Phrases for Real Conversations
Express full, partial and conditional agreement in French with workplace, community and friend dialogues plus explained contrast exercises.
In French, agreement and disagreement have degrees. You can accept a goal while questioning a method, disagree with a fact, or suggest a condition before deciding. The phrases here are for general conversation at work, in a community meeting and with friends. They are not a TCF speaking script.

Je ne suis pas d'accord avec vous is grammatical, but it can sound as if you reject the person rather than one proposal. In a sensitive conversation, identify the disputed point: Je ne suis pas d'accord avec la date proposée. Agreement phrases are useful only when the reason after them is genuine. For the grammatical point in the table, the OQLF lists à condition que with the subjunctive.
Workplace: challenge a deadline without rejecting the goal
Responsable: J'aimerais envoyer le rapport complet dès lundi.
Collègue: Je partage l'objectif de l'envoyer rapidement. En revanche, la partie financière ne sera vérifiée que mardi. Pourrions-nous envoyer un résumé lundi, puis le rapport complet mercredi ?
Responsable: Le résumé suffira-t-il pour la réunion ?
Collègue: Oui, si nous y indiquons clairement que les chiffres restent à confirmer. Je peux préparer cette version aujourd'hui.
The colleague agrees with speed, disagrees with the proposed deadline for the full document, and offers a feasible alternative. Pourrions-nous softens a proposal; the conditional does not erase the disagreement.
Community meeting: disagree about access
Membre A: Toutes les réunions du quartier devraient se tenir en ligne.
Membre B: Le format en ligne peut faciliter la participation de certaines personnes, et je suis favorable à cette possibilité. Cependant, je ne suis pas d'accord avec « toutes »: des habitants n'ont pas une connexion fiable. Pourquoi ne pas alterner les formats et publier un compte rendu ?
Membre A: L'alternance risque de compliquer l'organisation.
Membre B: C'est possible. Nous pourrions essayer deux réunions de chaque type, puis demander aux participants ce qui leur convient.
The disagreement concerns one word, toutes. The speaker accepts an implementation cost and proposes a limited trial, rather than claiming everyone will prefer one format.
Friends: keep the tone natural
Inès: On pourrait partir très tôt samedi pour avoir toute la journée sur place.
Malik: Oui pour partir samedi, mais six heures, c'est trop tôt pour moi. Et si on prenait le train de huit heures ?
Inès: On arriverait plus tard.
Malik: C'est vrai. Si tu veux visiter le musée dès l'ouverture, ton idée se défend. Sinon, huit heures nous laisse encore une bonne partie de la journée.
Friends who already use tu do not need the same distance as an unfamiliar manager. Ton idée se défend recognizes a reason without changing the speaker's preference.
Contrast exercise: choose the honest response
- Situation: You like a project's goal but cannot agree to its proposed cost. Choose between Je suis totalement d'accord and Je suis d'accord sur l'objectif, mais pas sur le budget. Answer: The second. It states precisely where agreement stops.
- Situation: A friend suggests a restaurant you cannot afford. Replace C'est une mauvaise idée. Possible answer: Le restaurant a l'air sympa, mais il dépasse mon budget. On peut chercher un autre endroit ? It gives a personal constraint and an alternative.
- Situation: A colleague gives evidence that changes your mind. Continue Je n'avais pas pensé à... Possible answer: Je n'avais pas pensé au délai de livraison. Avec cette information, je suis d'accord pour reporter l'envoi. Changing your view is more honest than repeating a prepared objection.
