C1 French Vocabulary for Precision, Scope and Register
An editorial C1-oriented selection for evidence, nuanced claims and register, with a fictional report and explained reformulation tasks.
C1-oriented vocabulary practice is about precision, register and scope. A writer should be able to describe what evidence supports, what remains uncertain and which formulation fits the audience. This editorial selection uses a fictional report on a neighbourhood reading room to practise those choices.
Selection 1: name the precise object of discussion
Un enjeu (m.) is what may be gained or lost; la portée (f.) is the extent or significance of something; une incidence (f.) is an effect; une retombée (f.) is a consequence, often indirect. Compare L'enjeu est l'accès au lieu with La portée de la mesure reste limitée à deux quartiers. The first names what matters; the second describes how far the action reaches. Un arbitrage (m.) can name a choice or mediation among competing needs; une marge de manœuvre (f.) is room to act; une contrainte (f.) limits that room. Le budget réduit la marge de manœuvre, mais n'écarte pas tout arbitrage. Do not use abstract nouns simply to sound advanced: each should answer a different question.
Selection 2: calibrate how certain you are
Un constat (m.) reports what is observed; une hypothèse (f.) proposes an explanation; un indice (m.) points toward one; une preuve (f.) supports a conclusion; une réserve (f.) limits acceptance of a claim. La fréquentation observée constitue un indice d'intérêt, mais non une preuve que l'horaire conviendra à tous. Corroborer means provide confirmation; étayer means support an argument; extrapoler means infer beyond the available observations. Deux entretiens ne suffisent pas à extrapoler à l'ensemble du quartier. That sentence sets the evidential boundary explicitly. Nuancer means adjust a judgement to show a subtle difference, not simply weaken it: Il faut nuancer cette conclusion selon les groupes interrogés.
Selection 3: express relationships and remedies
Concilier means make competing needs compatible: Comment concilier des horaires plus larges avec les ressources disponibles ? Susciter means bring about a reaction: La proposition a suscité des questions. Écarter removes an option from consideration; retenir selects one: Le groupe n'a écarté aucune option, mais a retenu deux scénarios pour un examen plus détaillé. Remédier à takes the preposition à: Cette mesure pourrait remédier à une difficulté d'accès. Mettre en perspective means place a finding in a broader context; faire le bilan de means review what happened. An observed result may need both before becoming a general recommendation.
Selection 4: choose the right level of formality
En l'état means with the information or situation as it currently stands; à ce stade signals the present step in a process; sous réserve de adds a condition; à défaut de means in the absence of. In a formal note, write En l'état, les données ne permettent pas de conclure rather than the casual On ne sait pas trop. Une formulation (f.) is the wording chosen; un registre (m.) is its level of formality; une nuance (f.) is a fine difference. Cette formulation laisse entendre que le projet est décidé identifies an implication that may need correction. Formal wording should improve accuracy, not hide a simple point.
Original short report
The report distinguishes observation, possible cause and recommendation. A progressé lors de deux soirées is an observed pattern in the fictional data; ne permettent pas d'attribuer blocks a causal leap. Étayer la poursuite d'une expérimentation supports another test, whereas ne justifient pas encore une extension permanente withholds a stronger conclusion. The formal register suits a report; it would be heavy in a quick message to a friend.
Analyse and reformulate
- Which phrase in the report prevents the claim that the new hours caused the attendance increase?
- Why should the few interviews not be extrapolated to the whole neighbourhood?
- What action does the report support now, and what stronger action does it withhold?
- Complete: Cette mesure pourrait remédier ___ une difficulté d'accès.
- Choose the precise noun: L'___ est l'accès du public; la ___ de la mesure se limite à un soir.
- Rewrite Tout le monde adore les nouveaux horaires as a defensible formal sentence based on the report.
- Rewrite En l'état, les relevés ne corroborent pas cette hypothèse for a friend in plain French while keeping the uncertainty.
Answers and explanations
- Les relevés ne permettent pas d'attribuer cette évolution au seul changement d'horaire. The report refuses a single-cause inference.
- The report says the group is too small to represent everyone. Extrapolation would extend beyond the evidence provided.
- It supports continuing an experiment, conditional on examining cost and workload; it does not yet support permanent expansion.
- à. The construction is remédier à quelque chose.
- enjeu; portée. One names what is at stake, the other the action's extent.
- For example, Plusieurs personnes interrogées ont accueilli favorablement l'essai, mais leur nombre ne permet pas de généraliser. It preserves both the favourable response and the limit.
- For example, Pour l'instant, les chiffres ne confirment pas cette idée. The wording is plainer while still withholding certainty.
Choose five items from this page and write each in two registers: a short message to a colleague and a formal paragraph. Check whether the meaning stayed the same. For the earlier task of comparing pros and cons, use the B2 selection; for source attribution, see media vocabulary.
