TCF Québec vs TCF Canada: Which Test Fits Your Application?

TCF Québec and TCF Canada serve different application decisions. Québec accepts both as possible French evidence for its PSTQ. For federal Express Entry, IRCC lists TCF Canada as an approved French test, not TCF Québec. TCF Québec lets candidates choose one to four modules; TCF Canada's four modules are compulsory. Choose by the exact application and skills you need to prove.

How the current formats compare

FEI's TCF Québec page describes listening as 29 scored paper questions in 25 minutes and reading as 29 in 45 minutes, with 3 writing exercises in 60 minutes and 3 speaking exercises in 12 minutes. The provider notes five additional unscored items in each comprehension module on computer. It says candidates may register for one to four modules. TCF Canada has 39 listening questions in 35 minutes, 39 reading questions in 60 minutes, 3 writing exercises in 60 minutes and 3 speaking exercises in 12 minutes; all four are required. These are format facts, not an indication that one is easier or more likely to produce a particular level.

Module choice does not mean you can omit an ability required by your immigration program. For example, Québec PSTQ Stream 1 requires oral level 7 and written level 5 on the Québec scale for the principal applicant, with a separate oral condition for an accompanying spouse. A candidate must read the current stream requirements and the certificate's available components before deciding what to book. Québec's own correspondence tables convert the accepted result to its scale; do not infer it from FEI's CEFR level or a federal NCLC number.

Three booking scenarios

1. Only a Québec PSTQ application is planned: Both variants appear on Québec's accepted list. Compare required abilities, approved-centre availability, scheduling, test fees and the corresponding Québec result table. A modular TCF Québec booking is useful only if it produces all the proof the stream requires.
2. Federal Express Entry is planned: Book a version IRCC actually accepts for French, such as TCF Canada. TCF Québec is not an Express Entry substitute simply because it has “TCF” in its name.
3. Plans are uncertain: Verify the current requirements of each realistic application first, then compare the provider's versions. A TCF Canada result may be listed for both Québec PSTQ and federal Express Entry, but acceptance in one process does not satisfy the other process's score, validity or eligibility rules.

For PSTQ, Québec says a test result must be no more than two years old on the date of the permanent-selection application. For Express Entry, IRCC requires a result less than two years old when the profile is completed and when the permanent-residence application is submitted. Keep both dates in view if using one result for separate plans. FEI's centre page controls actual local sessions and prices.

Citizenship is a separate evidence question: IRCC's citizenship document list includes TCF Québec/TCFQ under specified conditions and accepts several evidence types beyond these tests.
