How the Task 1 trainer works

TCF Canada Task 1 is a message of 60 to 120 words to a friend, a group or a stranger: an invitation, practical information, news, a recommendation. Most candidates at A2 or B1 can read the prompt and know what to say; marks go missing on accents, agreements, apostrophes and a mixed tu and vous. This trainer teaches the writing, not the vocabulary, and it starts one sentence at a time.

Five rungs, one chapter per message job

The 119 prompts here were reported by candidates on public archives between January 2022 and October 2026. Four jobs cover most of them: invite (27%), describe and inform (22%), ads, requests and replies (16.2%), personal news (11.8%). Each job is a chapter with five rungs: blocks (one sentence from an English cue), swaps (the same frame with a new register, number or detail), pairs (two or three linked sentences), a half-letter (the greeting and the sign-off are given, you write the body from a plan) and the full task under a 12-minute clock. A rung opens when 80% of the one below is cleared; a five-sentence placement check lets you skip what you already know.

Perfect, or back in the cycle

You type the French; the trainer compares it letter by letter. A perfect answer clears the sentence. One slip, an accent, an agreement, a capital, puts it back into the cycle a few sentences later, with the exact difference shown. Three slips in one session and you copy it once, then it waits until tomorrow. Across days, cleared sentences come back after 1, 2, 4, 7 and 14 days, closer together as your exam date nears.

The report

For a half-letter or a full task the trainer counts words the exam's way, flags a mixed tu and vous, a future after si, a missing greeting or sign-off, contraction and elision slips, long sentences and words the bank always writes with an accent. For each detail the prompt asks for it says what it found and leaves the rest to you, beside a model answer. Your texts are kept for the next version, which adds a judge.

Free to start

The first 30 sentences need no account. After that, sign in with Google to keep going; your cycle and your letters are saved to your account. The 106 blocks come from the constructions in our TCF vocabulary and writing kits; the swaps, pairs and half-letters were written for this trainer and proofread twice.
